Origins

Location:  district of Pare, NW of Kediri [map reference: 1508-332 Kunjang 13:10 44.45].

Leave Kediri town following the road to Pare. One passes Sambirejo and Bendo(sari) before coming to Desa Pelem where there is an intersection. Continue straight along untuk you reach Sekoto, then head East past Bringin. At desa Lamong, the road ends and meets a Nth-Sth road. Take this heading north in the direction of Krecek, but turn East (right) at the first opportunity, then follow the road along and Candi Surowono is just North (left) of the street.

The temple is believed to be referred to as Gurabhana in the Nagarakertagama in which case it is the burial place of the ashes [or memorial temple] of Wijayarajasa, Prince of Wengker,  who died in 1388 AD. His son-in-law, Rajasawardhana is linked with Candi Tegawangi.

Description of architecture

A base measuring 7.8 m square is all that remains of this temple. There was likely a wooden superstructure that did not survive.

Description of reliefs

The main story depicted on the temple is the Arjuna Wiwaha with the story starting on the East side of the temple (l-r, counterclock wise), continuing on the North side in clockwise direction starting from the panels on the side walls of the stairs, and reaching completion on the South Side where the panels run clockwise again ending at the side walls of the stairs. The corner stones show the story of Sri Tanjung (counterclock wise starting from the South), but are interrupted by two reliefs concerning Bubuksah on the NE side. Medallions on the base depict fables and tantri stories

The identification of the reliefs and the outlines of the stories are taken from Kinney 2003 who in turn based them on work done by Klokke.
