Origins

This temple was likely one of the funerary sites of Gayatri, wife of Kretarajasa and daughter of Kretanagara of Singasari. See: Krom (1923, II:167). Located in Jombang. See also Candi Gayatri.

Description of architecture

A single temple building on a two-terraced support of 8.8m2. The third terrace is the foot of the temple building.

Description of statue

The principal statue was one of Parvati (shown here on the right), that in style and conception resembles the Siva/ Harihara statue at Candi Simping/Sumberjati. [link] The base has reliefs in panels between two plain pillars that alternate with ornamented panels with pictures of a single 4-footed animal. The stories have not yet been identified, but Kinney (2003: 204) notes that a number of the reliefs in the sequence are identical to the series on the Pendopo Terrace at Panataran.

The North face of the temple building had a niche that likely contained a statue of Agastya with a water vessel in his left hand, and a trisula next to him.

Rediscovery and restoration

Described by Knebel in 1907 (OV1907 115-120; supplement OV1910: 42-44) and photographed by the Archeological Service in 1912.
