Origins

14^th C. The temple is likely to be built for King Jayanegara. Jayanegara was crowned young with the title Ratu Bajang. According to the Pararaton, Jayanegara died in 1328: "sira ta dhinarumeng kepopongan, bhiseka ring crnggapura prasista ring antawulan". Krom (1926) interpretes crnggapura as Çri Ranggapura of the Nagarakertagama and Antawulan with Antarasi in this work. In this way, the link with Jayanegara is laid.  

Description of architecture

Not in itself a sanctuary, this temple are the remains of a gate that would have led to one (in this case, most likely a shrine to Jayanegara). The tall tower is typical of the later E-Javanese style. The temple is rare in that it is still in good condition. The temple has ground diameters of 11.5 x 10.5m and is 16.5 metres tall. The entrance way is 1.4m 

Description of reliefs

Some images are still visible on the base. These have been identified as the popular Sri Tanjung series. The character Ra Nini is believed to be an impersonation of Godess Uma, Lord Çiva's consort.  Visiting the temple post restauration, I only identified reliefs on the right front panel.

Restoration

Restored in 1992 by the Majapahit Kingdom Treasures Heritage Board, and set in a park. The gardener went somewhat overboard with the animal shaped shrubs grown in the park. In my opinion, the park around Candi Brahu is more tasteful in its simplicity.
