Origins and location

Dated to the 8th - 10th C by the Yogyakarta Archeological Service based on comparison with other temples. The temple is dedicated to Siva, the principal deity of Hinduism.

Located in Desa Sambirejo, Prambanan District, East of the Ratuboko plateau. On the Solo-Yogya main road, turn South at Kranggan, directly opposite Candi Prambanan (located North of the main road). Follow this road South, past Ratuboko. The next turning East (perceived as 'left' when driving) takes you to Candi Banyunibo. Do not take this road, but take the next one. This road makes a 45deg turn South and then again East at Marangan before taking you to Candi Ijo via Desa Gunungsari. The Candi is situated on the North side (left as you approach) of the road.

Description of architecture and iconography

Constructed as a terraced structure. The Yogyakarta Archeological Service has identified 17 structures on 11 terraces. The upper terrace has one main temple containing a Lingga-Yoni as representation of Siva. The statue of his vehicle, the bull Nandi has also been found on the side and would likely have been located in the smaller temple facing its main entrance. There are two other flanking temples (see pictures) but there is no certainty what these might have contained.Three cellas in the outer wall of the principal temple likely contained images of Agastya, Ganesha and Durga. The roofs make extensive use of triangualar pointed decorative stones.
