Origins

Located on the Southern slopes of Mount Ungaran between Sumowono and Karanglo/ Bandungan. Map reference: 1408-541 Sumowono.

Constructed by the Sailendra dynasty in two stages between 730 - 780 and early in the 9th C. The temple is Hindu, and the principal statue in each temple group was dedicated to Ciwa.  

Description of architecture

The comples comprised of nine temple groups, some of which have now disappeared. 

Rediscovery and restoration

Restored under auspices of De Vink.
